The Grammar of Fun

"Why did mushrooms make Mario grow larger? Why did flowers give Mario the ability to spit fire? Why did bashing Mario’s head against bricks sometimes produce coins? And why was Mario’s enemy, Bowser, a saurian, spiky-shelled turtle?"

When Twitter Met Facebook: The Acquisition Deal That Fail-Whaled

Facebook is a social applications host, Google is a webservices suite, Microsoft makes OS and software… Twitter is a great service because it's independent. It's a community that loves the only service provided : it's Facebook's "is" and nothing more.

This status can be updated with anything, broadcasted on everything, read by everything… It's a service that doesn't need a ton of other services to work. Without last saturday night pictures, without suggested friends, without planned events, Twitter is still Twitter, while Facebook's "is" would be just Twitter. Buying Twitter, Facebook would create a conflict between the two status services and would merge them, Twitter's "@" messages would disappear…

For a independent Twitter, put your hand up in the air o/

LaTeX vs. Word vs. Writer

There is no doubt that LaTeX produces way more beautiful documents than Microsoft Word, even if Word defaults settings are changed.

The thing is people need a word processor that comes out of the box with professional fonts, nice alignment parameters. They sure don't want a piece of software that begs them to download fuzzy fonts and paste text from a web page without reformatting all of this…

People don't want to learn a language for writing text either. They don't want to spend hours to find this package that would looks so great drawing a horizontal line under the header.

Apple Pages is a good alternative, it's my choice for creating professional documents (and believe me, I'm a real typomaniac) without losing time with LaTeX.

Adobe CS4: Yet another lousy Adobe installer

Installation is the first experience of an application. And Adobe CS4 users will start on a really bad experience.

I remember Photoshop 4 or 5 installer, you just had to drag and drop, just like any other Mac app since 1984. I fully understand that a suite like this one need a complete installer but, come on, we're talking about Adobe here, not a crappy studio and a buggy cheap software !

Typically the kind of stuff I love : studying the user experience. And it's even funnier with Windows Vista.

STOP IE6 campaign – A campaign devoted to wiping IE6 off the web

I don't want to be mean, but IE7 isn't web standards compliant either.

That's probably why Microsoft is considering using WebKit for Internet Explorer.
