★ "The bigger problem is that Microsoft isn’t very good, and I mean that in a big way. I was too young to appreciate their word-processor and spreadsheet battles of the very early 90s, but that’s what Joel typically cites as an example of Microsoft’s excellent strategy and their production of high-quality software. They may have been great back then, but that’s not the Microsoft we know today."
★ "A tablet computer has limited appeal. Who, apart from illustrators, illustrators who use a computer, is a tablet useful to?"
When iPod was first introduced, nobody *needed* that kind of device. Just like nobody was waiting for an iPhone.
If Apple were to introduce a tablet device, it would be a new kind of device. Something unbelievable, something totally new, something we still think we don't need.
★ "And AIR apps are like modern day Java applets… sure, they run on every platform. But they also suck on every platform."
★ “You may ask “why would you want to type so much on a machine that’s not really designed for it”, I say: why is it not designed for it, when the web is made up of much typing—e-mails, forums, blogs and so forth? It is a complete faux-pas to think that the keyboard is less-important on a computer built for browsing, when typing is the primary interface to the computer.”
I’ll add that just like the keyboard, the trackpad is crucial. I’ve *never* used a good trackpad on any laptop except MacBooks.
I still don’t get the SD Card slot need, but I agree that a second USB port could be useful for some people (but really not a lot of them).
In the end, the MacBook Air would be the perfect notebook with a additional USB port and a 3G chip. A notebook that is not a notebook.
★ The ten points are relevant, but the most interesting one is :
"Have you ever read the tweets of somebody who genuinely answers this question? "Just woke up", "going to work", "having lunch", "really tired". Dull, dull, dull, and a lot of the parodies of Twitter harp on this aspect. So let's be clear: this is a terrible way to use Twitter. Twitter is not what you're doing, Twitter is what you're thinking."
★ "Windows Vista. Underneath it all, it’s Still Windows®"
The logo sums it all.
★ "You see, in Windows NT, 2000, XP and Vista, Explorer used to Hide extensions for known file types. And virus writers used this "feature" to make people mistake executables for stuff such as document files."
★ "If Apple buys Twitter, it won't be about making money. It will be about making a statement. In 140 characters or less."
